Samsung Introduces New Galaxy Gear Smartwatch

The smartwatch game is getting real… at least for Samsung, which introduced its new Galaxy Gear smartwatch at the IFA electronics show in Berlin Wednesday.

“At the moment, the only people who wear things on their wrist are people old enough to have an AARP card. Students look at wristwatches today the same way that their grandparents looked at pocket watches in the middle of the last century, as an unbelievably old-fashioned thing,” said Paul Saffo, long-range forecaster at Stanford University. “But that is about to change.”

The device will go on sale later this month, selling at $299, according to USA Today. It will be allow you to check on things such as e-mail and text messages that are sent to your phone without having to remove the phone from your pocket.

I’m seriously interested- are you?

Omate’s Android-Based Smartwatch Soaring In Popularity

Omate, a company currently experimenting with smartwatch devices, set a Kickstarter goal of $100,000 to fund its TruSmart smartwatch. That goal was quickly reached as Omate has raised over $250,000 so far, and the company still has about a month to continue building the fund.

“On paper, pound for pound, this looks like a very good smartwatch,” said ABI Research mobile device senior analyst Michael Morgan to TechNewsWorld.

“It’s competitive in design, competitive in features. It’s so competitive I have to wonder if they didn’t get ahead of themselves. It has everything that I would expect to see in a $350 smartphone.”

The watch is set to sell for $199.

Omate says TruSmart will have a ton of awesome features, such as calendar, GPS, music playing, SMS and social media messaging and voice call capabilities. It even has a five MP camera!

Tech analysts are anticipating electronic giants like Apple to release major smartwatch projects in the coming months.

Pebble Smartwatch Coming To Best Buy

Just a day ago, we heard about Apple’s efforts in Japan for an “iWatch” trademark. While telling you about that I mentioned the Pebble smartwatch. Guess what’s coming to Best Buy stores this weekend- the Pebble smartwatch.

Sunday, Best Buy will be selling the device on both its website and in stores. It was first shipped to users of the crowd-funding website, Kickstarter, in January, then was put up for sale on Pebble’s website, getpebble.com.

The smartwatch uses Bluetooth technology to connect to Androids and iPhones and alert users to incoming calls and messages without the users having to look at the phones. For now, you can get the watch in jet-black, but later this summer you’ll be able to get cherry-red, as well as gray, orange and white online.

The  company says the watch will cost $150.

“We’ve learned that people want their Pebbles,” Pebble Technology Corp. Chief Executive Eric Migicovsky said in a statement. “Thanks to Best Buy, we’re giving folks more ways to make that happen.”

Let the smartwatch competition begin.

Apple Seeking ‘iWatch’ Trademark In Japan

Apple smartwatches are coming… I can feel it.

According to Bloomberg, the technology giant is applying for an ‘iWatch’ trademark in Japan. In the application, the product is categorized as a handheld computer or watch device. With this information, along with reports back in February that Apple was working on a device that runs the iOS mobile operation system, how could we think Apple isn’t creating a smartwatch?

Sony is the only company at this time that sells a smartwatch, but that’s expected to change over the next few years. At the beginning of the year, the Pebble smartwatch was unveiled to a small group of people, and it featured technology that connects the watch to a smartphone. It could pick up text messages, Twitter posts and more.

With smartwatches and smartglasses in mind, I’m trying to think of other devices that may be invented in the future. What about smart-headphones that could connect to smartphones? When a voicemail is left on your phone, it could be sent to your headphones and played for you, along with weather alerts and other important messages.

Keep an eye out for these watches, because in the world of technology, dreams tend to come true.
