Samsung Introduces New Galaxy Gear Smartwatch

The smartwatch game is getting real… at least for Samsung, which introduced its new Galaxy Gear smartwatch at the IFA electronics show in Berlin Wednesday.

“At the moment, the only people who wear things on their wrist are people old enough to have an AARP card. Students look at wristwatches today the same way that their grandparents looked at pocket watches in the middle of the last century, as an unbelievably old-fashioned thing,” said Paul Saffo, long-range forecaster at Stanford University. “But that is about to change.”

The device will go on sale later this month, selling at $299, according to USA Today. It will be allow you to check on things such as e-mail and text messages that are sent to your phone without having to remove the phone from your pocket.

I’m seriously interested- are you?

Omate’s Android-Based Smartwatch Soaring In Popularity

Omate, a company currently experimenting with smartwatch devices, set a Kickstarter goal of $100,000 to fund its TruSmart smartwatch. That goal was quickly reached as Omate has raised over $250,000 so far, and the company still has about a month to continue building the fund.

“On paper, pound for pound, this looks like a very good smartwatch,” said ABI Research mobile device senior analyst Michael Morgan to TechNewsWorld.

“It’s competitive in design, competitive in features. It’s so competitive I have to wonder if they didn’t get ahead of themselves. It has everything that I would expect to see in a $350 smartphone.”

The watch is set to sell for $199.

Omate says TruSmart will have a ton of awesome features, such as calendar, GPS, music playing, SMS and social media messaging and voice call capabilities. It even has a five MP camera!

Tech analysts are anticipating electronic giants like Apple to release major smartwatch projects in the coming months.
